After campaigning on a promise to make the 2015 Federal Election the last one held under our current first-past-the-post system, the Liberals commissioned a Special Committee on Electoral Reform in June 2016. The committee then set about consulting with Canadians across the country, asking them whether or not we should change our voting system. During these town hall meetings, over 88 percent of the citizens and experts who testified recommended some form of proportional representation.

Following nationwide consultations on how and whether we should change our voting system, and after studying the issue of electoral reform for several months, the House of Commons’ Special Committee on Electoral Reform has delivered a report recommending a system of proportional representation (PR) for Canada.

A recent poll by Forum Research, which surveyed 1,437 Canadian voters, found that nearly two-thirds support a $15 national minimum wage, while only 31 percent oppose the idea. The poll discovered that opposition to a $15 minimum wage is highest among wealthy Canadians – people earning $100,000 to $250,000 a year – while older voters, the less wealthy, those living in Atlantic Canada and British Columbia, and Canadians with some college or university education support the idea.
